Letters From Taipei: Brimming With Bread

assorted taiwanese breads

Day And Night

Have you ever had freshly baked bread right out of the oven? Here in Taiwan, you can have it at any hour of the day or night.

I had no idea bakeries would be everywhere. There are small corner shop bakeries and huge chain bakeries that bake all different kinds of bread. And since bakeries are constantly baking -- some even twenty four hours a day -- chances are that when you go into one, something has just popped out of the oven.

Many Styles To Choose From

Taiwanese breads come in many different styles and range from sweet to savory. I've had French baguettes and crumpets, garlic breads, multi-grains, raisin and taro breads, and breads filled with red bean paste. Others I've seen have hot dogs inside them, mayonnaise slathered all over, and dried minced meat sprinkled on top.

How you get your bread is simply wonderful, and I wish I could take the method home with me. First you grab a tray and a pair of tongs. Then you browse, picking for yourself what you want to purchase. At the register they bag the bread and cut it up how you want it.

It's an easy and cheap snack on the go -- a fabulous breakfast too. And while my waistband won't miss the breads here, my stomach surely will!
