A Humane Love Affair - Jeff Mease On Raising And Harvesting Pigs

Daniel Orr and Jeff Mease

Pigs have been raised for thousands of years. They're one of our first domesticated animals and have long been one of man's best friends. As things have evolved over the past 100 years, "raising pigs" has become "hog farming."

The new white meat not only became a term for stock trading – pork bellies – and government spending – pork barrel – but it's in the center of much debate on the humane treatment of animals.

Today, I'm speaking to a local restauranteur and entrepreneur, Jeff Mease, about his thoughts on pigs, pork and getting to know these big beautiful creatures.

The way he interacts with his animals, you can just tell how fond he is of them. But, Jeff does humanely slaughter his animals to feed his family. He also sells his animals for breeding stock.

He does his best to give his animals a happy and healthy life, but there's no getting around the fact that this is a sensitive subject in the foodie community, whether you're a vegetarian or not.

What do you think about the ethics of meat harvesting? Let us know in the comments.
