Green Drinks: Socializing with Sustainability

Maggie Sullivan presents to Green Drinks

When I first heard of "Green Drinks" I have to admit that the first thing that came to mind was St Patty's Day in Manhattan… the green beer flowing in the Irish bars and in the gutters. Not a pretty sight.

But the green drinks movement of today is more about saluting libations created around the block than a block party celebrating leprechauns. Events like "Green Drinks" are happening all over the country and if there isn't one in your community, for goodness sakes get one started.

Groups like this are as much about the company you keep as the liquid in your cup. As we've said before, "Think Global, drink local." I promise you won't see green leprechauns, but you might find a like-minded "Tall Drink of Water."

In this episode of Earth Eats, we chat with three of the folks who have made Green Drinks in Bloomington, Indiana such a hit… Andy Davis, Melissa Henige, and Marcia Veldman.

They told me what the group is all about and how they started one in south-central Indiana. They say it's easy: find some like-minded friends, find a venue, and send some e-mails.

"On of the things I like about Green Drinks is that it's welcoming," Veldman said. "If this is the first time you've heard the word sustainability, you are so welcome!"
