Beginning November 1, households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits -- commonly referred to as food stamps -- will see a decrease in their benefits.
A byproduct of parts of the economic stimulus package expiring, cuts to benefits will vary household to household. While a family of three is looking at a $29 monthly reduction, a family of eight will see benefits drop by $65, for example.
To lessen the blow, the USDA has released information on new the changes, including how much will be cut and resources to help plan and prepare.
As a result of the cutbacks, the Federal Government will save some $5 billion. Despite some protests in Washington, organized efforts to stop the cuts have been few.
47 million Americans -- roughly one out of seven -- currently receive food stamps.
