Movie Popcorn: More Fattening Than Three Quarter Pounders!?

popcorn

A recent study done by the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that a regular-sized bag of popcorn and medium coke at some of America's most prominent movie chains pack the nutritional equivalent of three Quarter Pounders topped with 12 pats of butter.

The Dangers Of Coconut Oil

A similar study was complete just 15 years ago and shows that little has changed in the movie-concession industry since. In their research, CSPI calculated the popcorn calories counts of three different movie chains: Regal Entertainment Group, AMC, and Cinemark.

Medium Popcorn (20 cups)

  • 1,200 calories
  • 60 grams of saturated fat
  • 980 milligrams of sodium (w/out the buttery toppings)
  • With butter: adds another 200 calories and 3 grams of saturated fat per 1.5 tablespoons.

The other two cinema groups didn't do much better. Most of the high calorie counts can be contributed to the large amounts of added coconut oil, which is 90% saturated fat.
