2012 Farm Bill Update, Hearing Held In South Dakota

Chairman of the House Agriculture Commitee Collin Peterson (D - MN) and colleague Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D - SD)Â held another hearing to discuss the 2012 Farm Bill last week.

The hearing on May 18 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota included discussions about how to tweak programs enacted in the 2008 farm bill, such as crop insurance policies.

Current policy affects which crops are available to consumers, because current government subsidies set price minimums for crops such as corn, soy, wheat, and rice, ensuring that these farmers get paid.

This influences consumers' daily food choices – making calorie-laden fast food readily available, and healthier choices more expensive and harder to find.

The new Farm Bill won't go to Congress until 2012, but the House Committee on Agriculture is looking for feedback, via this form. All feedback must be received by June 14 order for comments to be considered part of the Committee's Farm Bill field hearing record.
