On Wednesday U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., announced his intentions to introduce a bill that would require the labeling of all genetically modified food.
Polis argues the bill is about "empowering people with information they need to make their own healthy choices."
He was joined by Oregon Democrat Peter DeFazio and California Democrat Barbara Boxer in introducing the bill.
Opponents of GM labeling campaigns say fear of genetically modified foods is unwarranted. "Labeling as genetically engineered would infer there is a difference in those products when none actually exists," Eric Maier of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers told the Huffington Post.
An initiative is also currently in front of the Washington State Legislature that would require GM labeling.
