Senator Wants GMO Label Bill Passed By End Of The Year

The ranking Democrat – Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan – says she's committed to getting a G-M-O labeling bill passed by the end of this year.

She says most consumers care deeply about where their food comes from, but she doesn't want a patchwork of laws passed in states across the country.

"I share the concern about the difficulty in doing business across our country if 50 different states have 50 different standards and requirements. And frankly, it won't work."

North Dakota Democrat Heidi Heitkamp told a USDA scientist that the government has done a poor job of communicating what she says is the strong science behind genetically altered food.

"Except what people hear is: blah blah blah blah blah. (I know that.) And I think that's a serious problem… because we're talking about how do we provide consumer information and information consumers want vs. what consumers need."

The House passed a bill in July that outlaws state labeling laws and would set up a voluntary federal system.
