Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Nestlé Transforms Zero Water Factory

To save water in drought-stricken California, Nestlé will renovate its nine facilities in the state to reduce or eliminate their use of water.

The Swiss company has already opened a "zero-water" plant in Mexico, where the milk plant extracts all necessary water from raw ingredients.

The Nestlé USA milk factory in Modesto, California will also be transformed into a "zero-water" facility, saving an estimated 63 million gallons of water per year.

Engineers at Nestlé first look for ways to reduce water consumption in their processes. Then they look for ways to recycle the water they do use. Then, the most technologically advanced step: they extract water from raw materials and recycle it.

Nestlé anticipates the Modesto zero-water facility will be finished by the end of 2016.
