Calorie Counts Delayed, Rules FDA

The Food and Drug Administration has delayed the deadline for restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus.

While some restaurants have been doing this voluntarily, like Starbucks and McDonald's, others have resisted the FDA's ruling.

Pizza restaurants in particular have argued that calorie counts serve no purpose to those who don't physically visit a restaurant and view the menu board.

The FDA said it would delay the deadline for a year, making calorie count postings mandatory by December 1, 2016.

Critics argue the delay will only give those opposed to posting calorie information more time to lobby against the measure.

The FDA argues it's buying more time to clarify the ruling and help expedite the process.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 put into motion that calorie counts should be on menus of restaurant chains, movie theaters and pizza parlors, but enforcement has been a long time coming -- and just got a little longer.
