100 New York Schools Pledge To Stop Making Trash

New York City is selecting 100 schools to take part in a pilot project to recycle or compost all of the waste they produce.

The city's departments of education and sanitation have teamed up on the $1.1 million program, which kicks off this winter.

The program is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's goal to eliminate the use of landfills by 2030.

New York is stepping up its waste-reduction effort on several fronts, including a single-stream recycling system, reduction of plastic bags and cutting back on commercial waste.

The city has been expanding a school composting program over the last three years, with 720 schools now participating.

A survey of nine Manhattan schools showed that nearly half of the schools' food waste was saved from landfills as a result of that experiment.
