Dozens of people gathered at the beach at Fairfax State Recreation Area Monday despite health officials' pleas to maintain social distancing to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
Swimmers, sunbathers and boaters alike took advantage of the 85-degree weather and sun on Memorial Day.
Peter Corney says his family’s beach day was their first outing in six weeks.
“We’re still trying to keep as far apart from other people as possible, but, you know, it is nice to come out and try and enjoy the weather on this glorious day," he says.
Beachgoer Jeremy Clarkson says, as a recovering drug addict, he’s less concerned about the coronavirus than his home situation.
“The way that I was living my life a week ago, prior to me getting clean, is way worse than anything the coronavirus can do," he says.
Clarkson says he believes he will eventually get the virus.
“I’m not real concerned about social distancing," he says. "If I get it, I get it. If I don’t, I don’t.”
