Graduate workers rallied outside the Herman B Wells Library Tuesday to demand an end to fees that Indiana University charges each semester.

Graduate student workers at IU pay hundreds of dollars in fees each year for building rehabilitation, technology, transportation and other services.

Marisa Wieneke is a teacher and organizer with the Indiana University Graduate Workers Coalition, she says students shouldn’t have to pay to work.

“Most of my food comes from a food pantry," she says. "And I am just trying to do the best job I can for this university whose mission I believe in. And I feel like I’m not being paid enough for the labor that I’m doing. So, we’re fighting to end the fees.”

Nearly 2,000 have signed a petition calling to end the fees, which they say are unaffordable.

Spokesman Chuck Carney said IU officials welcomed dialogue with the student workers and were looking for ways to increase stipends to offset the fees.
