Postponed elective medical procedures have led to hospital workers across the country losing hours, jobs and getting furloughed.
That hasn’t been the case for IU Health, though, according to IU Health South Central Region President Brian Shockney.
“There’s not been any reductions in force or any layoffs throughout the state with IU Health,” he says. “And there are no plans to do so.”
Shockney credits prior planning for keeping the health system and its employees financially afloat. IU Health had a supply of personal protective equipment at its Integrated Service Center in Plainfield and maintained cash reserves so physicians, advanced care providers, and staff would continue receiving paychecks.
“We don’t know when this is over, we don’t know if this might not happen again in the fall,” Shockney says. “And if it does, we want to be able to continue to provide our team members security and confidence that their employer can continue to keep them employed and support them in these times of need.”
Gov. Eric Holcomb fully lifted the state’s ban on elective medical procedures April 27.
