Bloomington Police Still Trying to ID Driver Of Car Used In Hit-And-Run

Bloomington Police are still looking for the man and woman whose car sped through protesters Monday night and injured two people.

In a statement Wednesday, Capt. Ryan Pedigo said police have not been able to locate the vehicle or confirm the identities of the people inside.

“The address we had for the registered owner of the vehicle is no longer a valid address and we can't confirm, at this point, that the woman driving the vehicle at the time of the incident is indeed the registered owner,” Capt. Pedigo said.

“The investigation is still ongoing and active, and therefore it would be inappropriate for me to comment on possible charges at this point.”

While they have not released the names, police have asked for help from the public. They have circulated video and photo stills of the man and woman.

Witnesses said the car carried a woman on its hood the length of a block before turning sharply, throwing her into the street. The woman was briefly hospitalized. Another man who was hanging on the side of the car suffered minor injuries.

The incident occurred late Monday after several hundred demonstrators gathered in downtown Bloomington to rally against racism and show solidarity with a Black man who says he was attacked by a group of White people over the weekend at Lake Monroe.

Bloomington resident Vauhxx Booker, who is Black, says several White men attacked him and shouted racial epithets during an outing near Lake Monroe.

On Tuesday, his lawyer said the FBI was investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Booker is a member of the Monroe County Human Rights Commission.
