Wine Production

The following year, Dufour purchased a 2500-acre tract of land on the Indiana side of the Ohio River. Cultivation of such grapes as the native Alexander, and a hybrid variety known as the Cape proved successful at the Swiss Vineyards, also known as New Switzerland.

Within the cultural mythology of Indiana, Hoosiers are traditionally considered good, wholesome folks…but not exactly saints ? The Hoosier demographic was broadened considerably, however, with the canonization of a French native who came to Indiana as a missionary.

Kennedy and King

Indiana’s Democratic leadership was not enthusiastic about Robert Kennedy’s presidential bid in 1968, which he had announced in mid-March, just before flying to Indianapolis to register for its May primary. The junior Senator from New York and erstwhile U.S. Attorney General who had long championed civil rights returned to stump across Indiana April 4 th.

John Birch Society

The anti-communist climate that prevailed during the post-war period in the United States may be most vividly represented by the investigations of the House Un-American Activities Committee. A somewhat less familiar manifestation of Cold War uneasiness was the John Birch Society. The still-active conservative political advocacy group had its start in Indiana.

To commemorate the bicentennial of the United States Library of Congress, Congress launched a project that would provide a time capsule of American culture in the year 2000 . Local Legacies documented and celebrated more than 1300 festivals, gatherings and observances taking place in diverse communities across the country.
