“I was surprised by how exciting, but also heartbreaking, it is to receive a letter back from an inmate.”– Maria Johnson, Volunteer

The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project provides books to inmates, enabling prisoners to learn so that they will have an easier transition out of prison.

“It’s about self-education,” says Maria Johnson, a volunteer with the Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project. Inmates send letters requesting books to the project. Volunteers read and respond to the letters, and they pick books from among the donations the project receives to send back to the inmate.

“We definitely want to assist them as much as they can in becoming educated in whatever area they’d like,” says Johnson.

The project additionally hopes that the volunteers will learn more about prisons and begin conversations about them in their community.
