The mission of the Monroe County Humane Association is to responsibly and compassionately lead, advocate, and educate for animal welfare. The Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) has education programs that bring Animal Ambassadors such as Slinky the ferret, Nick the Orphaned Kitten, and Boris the Great Horned Owl to schools and other groups to teach children about wild and domestic animals. They also have a Spay/Neuter Assistance Program that provides qualified pet owners with vouchers for reduced-cost spay or neuter surgery from certain area veterinarians.
In addition to public education and outreach, MCHA also works with law enforcement agencies to enforce animal welfare laws, often by riding along on raids of cockfighting and dog fighting rings or animal hoarders. In conjunction with law enforcement, the Monroe County Humane Association collects evidence, documents and treats animal injuries, and places the animals in shelters and animal sanctuaries. MCHA’s advocacy arm also seeks to update animal welfare laws.
