“We are eager to introduce the younger citizens of our community to their history and their roots and to help foster an understanding of what history is. We’re not only just preserving the past, what we want to do is help build our community and be an important part of that community.”
The Monroe County History Center aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Monroe County’s history, culture, and natural environment by all. The Center collects, preserves, researches, interprets and exhibits the genealogy, history and artifacts of Monroe County, Indiana as well as researches and interprets the relation of the County’s genealogy, history and artifacts to the State of Indiana and the United States. The Monroe County History Center operates a museum, a local history library, and a museum store.
In the summer of 2011 the MCHC will host its first Gayle Cook Junior Historian Program, which will introduce young Monroe County citizens to their roots, fostering an understanding of the importance of history.
