I like to keep the culture and atmosphere in the house as homelike as can be. We don’t have a lot of signs or things that wouldn’t be found in your own house. As much as possible we like to let people feel like they’ve found a place they can feel safe, comfortable. –Robert Young, Executive Director
The New Hope Family Shelter provides temporary shelter for homeless families in Bloomington and Monroe County and, in collaboration with other agencies, helps those families regain housing by addressing the problems that led to homelessness.
New Hope shelters “intact family units,” according to Executive Director Robert Young. This means they shelter mothers or fathers with children, or family units of more than one parent and their child/children. In a two-parent household, the parents do not have to be married. The shelter does not house single adults.
New Hope has the capacity to shelter three families at a time, with each family staying a maximum of ninety days.
It is the only family shelter in Monroe County. Wellspring Center, in Martinsville, provides similar services for Morgan county.
