Cloth diapering does take a little more effort than wrapping up a disposable and throwing it in the trash, that’s the truth. However, it isn’t hard to take care of cloth diapers. -Rachel Frush Holt, co-founder of Heiny Helpers.
The mission of Heiny Helpers is to provide cloth diapers and cloth diapering support to families with low incomes in the Bloomington area. A family that qualifies for WIC (a federal assistance program providing food and health care for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children), is eligible to receive diapers from Heiny Helpers at no cost. Heiny Helpers is a program of First United Church, and was started by three of First United’s members.
Heiny Helpers will provide enough cloth diapers to diaper an infant full-time, including at night, and a wet sack in which to store diapers before they go in the wash. They will also provide support and answer any questions families may have about cloth diapering.
Typically, co-founder Rachel Frush Holt says, it costs about $300 to start cloth diapering, but parents will save more than $2,000 by not buying disposable diapers. In addition to the cost savings, cloth diapers mean fewer disposables in the landfills.
Heiny Helpers is spreading information about cloth diapering in the hopes that it will be less daunting for parents. For those looking for more information, the FAQs section of their website answers questions such as: how can one diaper fit my newborn all the way until she’s a toddler? What do I do when we go on vacation or visit our family over the holidays? Where do you keep the dirty diapers while you’re waiting for laundry day? And, do they really get clean?
