Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County has launched a repair and weatherization program.
The program is aimed at homeowners with very high utility bills, who need help with weatherization to reduce their bills, but whose homes need other repairs too.
Habitat’s repairs can fix leaky roofs and windows, help with mold problems, and more. After the repairs are complete, Habitat will weatherize the home for maximum energy efficiency.
Other weatherization programs, such as the one administered by South Central Community Action Program, do not have funds to do repairs, and cannot weatherize a home with health and safety concerns such as mold.
Habitat for Humanity launched the program because its staff members were receiving calls from homeowners looking for help with home repairs.
The program will have a similar model to their flagship home-building program, in that homeowners are asked to pay a portion of the costs, based on the size of the repair, and also to contribute “sweat equity” to Habitat or another community organization, such as the library.
Habitat’s Repair and Weatherization program is open to homeowners who meet certain criteria; for example, homes cannot be in danger of foreclosure.
