“What I would love generally for them to take away from it is that whatever their own passions are, it’s really likely that they can find a way to either express themselves through opera or to appreciate someone else doing that through opera.” Kimberly Carballo, Founder and Director of ROK
ROK’s mission is to introduce children and youth to opera. There are two ways that ROK works to meet this goal. ROK provides curriculum and live performances.
Curriculum
ROK sends information to teachers and students. The curriculum allows for k-12 students to study opera before their first concert experience.
Kim Carballo says, “You would think that they might be a little bit resistant to that, but actually, we show up and they are really receptive.”
Performance
The live opera performances allow students to experience the unique musical experience at no cost to the school system. ROK’s performers volunteer their time.
Carballo adds that the program has an educational value to the performers as well. The experience works as an introduction to being an educator and to using music performance in community service.
