Kilimanjaro Education Outreach works in Tanzania, but is based in Bloomington. The organization has opportunities for people looking to volunteer two to four weeks at a time in Tanzania.
After living in Tanzania and…seeing the challenges children face in education, it is a real pleasure for me to work towards Kilimanjaro Education Outreach’s goals in building community libraries and providing a free space for children to learn and grow. –Shawn Miya, Secretary
Kilimanjaro Education Outreach partners with local stakeholders in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania to improve quality of life by enhancing community-owned educational infrastructure, providing HIV prevention classes, and promoting volunteerism. According to Shawn Miya, the goal is that community members will have the opportunity to “learn new skills and participate in learning clubs.”
In 2012, Kilimanjaro Education Outreach, called “Kileo” for short, will begin building libraries in Tanzania. Their goal is to create libraries that are community spaces for both schoolchildren and adults.
Kileo has opportunities for volunteers who are interested in going to Tanzania for two to four weeks at a time to “build libraries, fill them with books, and develop educational programs,” as Miya says. Volunteers in Indiana can also help organize events and other fundraisers.
