Indiana Legal Services (ILS) is a a nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal assistance to eligible low-income people. ILS helps clients who are faced with legal problems that harm their ability to have such basics as food, shelter, income, medical care or personal safety. Most of the cases ILS handles are cases such as family law where there is domestic violence, housing, consumer law, access to health care, and access to government benefits. ILS does not handle any criminal matters.
Indiana Legal Services in Bloomington has eight lawyers on staff who work with clients on civil issues. Some lawyers are dedicated to immigration and language rights, preventing renters from falling into homelessness, and foreclosure prevention. In 2010, ILS brought 1,100 cases to completion.

Volunteers at Indiana Legal Services do not have to be lawyers or law students. Volunteers can assist with interviewing prospective clients, help with clerical duties, or if they have the expertise, help prepare income tax returns.
