Greene County Literacy Coalition

The Literacy Coalition primarily works with learners over the age of 18

Each new reader works individually with a tutor to learn reading skills, prepare for the GED, or learn English as a second language.

Last year we have eleven learners that received their GED and one learner who got her citizenship, so that was very exciting for us.  -Beth Burcham, literacy coordinator

The mission of the Greene County Literacy Coalition is to promote literacy through existing programs, to develop new programs and to increase public awareness of and involvement in the cause for literacy.

The Literacy Coalition’s main focus has been on the recruitment of new readers, and the training of volunteer tutors who work individually with all new readers that come to the Coalition.

While the Coalition works primarily with adult learners, they do coordinate with Head Start to provide literacy tutoring for their students.

Currently the Coalition offers a number of programs for adults, including tutoring for those working toward their GED and those learning English as a second language. They also have program in math and living skills, and facilitate GED preparation at the Work Release Center and the Greene County Jail.
