Giving Back to Africa creates a project-based curriculum to teach not only real-world problem-solving, but community building as well.
The mission of Giving Back to Africa is empower students in the Democratic Republic of Congo through service-centered education. The ultimate goal is that the students will become servant-leaders capable of taking control of their own lives while serving as change agents in their local communities and throughout the nation.
Giving Back to Africa (GBA) is a Bloomington-based international nonprofit. GBA focuses on the Democratic Republic of Congo because its co-founder, Ann Marie Thompson was born and raised there.
GBA is currently developing a curriculum which focuses on access to clean water. It is a project-based curriculum, which means students are encouraged to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to the problem, all while being “the ambassadors to the community to make changes and improvements,” according to executive director Michael Valliant.
