We’re really an organization that’s about developing girls for life.– Deborah Hearn Smith, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana
Girl Scouts’ stated mission is to “build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.” Girls Scouts meet in small groups to work on a wide range of skills.
“Our job is to really expose girls to as much as we can, from arts, to science, to the natural world, to the physical world,” says Deborah Hearn Smith, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana.
In addition to improving skills, Girl Scouts learn to build relationships. Girls in a troop gain a sense of community within the group, and they learn about their wider community as well.
“Every troop, at least once if not twice a year, is asked to give service to their community,” says Smith. “Whether it’s nursing home, whether it’s planting trees, cleaning up a park, a food collection–every troop is doing service.”
