Monroe County CASA: Court Appointed Special Advocates For Children

Monroe County CASA trains advocates for children who are involved in juvenile court as a result of abuse or neglect.

CASAs provide advocacy to child victims to ensure that they remain at the forefront of the court proceedings and find a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible.

Our goal is with all the people that come into their life, and go from their life, once we put a CASA in their lives, that that person never changes. And that’s one person that child can count on throughout the life of the case to be present for them, to listen to them, and to represent them in court.—Amanda Wyatt, Assistant Director

Monroe County CASA recruits, trains and supervises court appointed special advocates for children who are involved in the juvenile courts as a result of abuse or neglect.

“Special advocates go into the courtroom with all of the information the court needs about the child, and what’s in the child’s best interest,” says Assistant Director Amanda Wyatt. “They help inform the judge what’s in the best interest of only the child.”

CASA volunteers receive 33 hours of training. Because juvenile court cases can last a year or more, volunteers are asked to commit to one to two years of volunteering with the organization, so they can be a consistent presence in the life of the children they are advocating for in court.
