Utility companies are prohibited from discontinuing service to customers during the COVID-19 pandemic according to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s executive order. A questioner asked City Limits: Coronavirus about whether their household utilities could be reconnected.
The March 19 order stipulates gas and electric, broadband, telecom, water and wastewater services cannot be shut off. While the shut-offs are temporarily suspended, customers are still responsible for paying for the utilities they use during this period.
The companies will continue to send bills during this time and encourage customers to pay what they can to avoid accumulating a large balance that will be difficult to pay off.
We checked with South Central Indiana REMC, Duke Energy and Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC and all said they will work with customers on a payment plan.
