Indiana University's Board of Trustees voted Thursday to increase student housing and dining rates.

According to the proposal, standard rates for housing at IU Bloomington will increase by $275. There would be an increase between $353 and $395 for larger bedrooms.

The proposed housing increases for IUPUI would jump by $129 to $324, depending on the size and location of the residence hall.

IU South Bend's campus apartment rates will increase between $37 and $67, depending on the amenities. Housing rates at IU Southeast will rise between $140 and $180.

“Those are still fairly modest increases, about middle of the pack in the Big 10,” says IU spokesperson Chuck Carney.

Carney says the increases for on campus housing are comparable to the average price of rent in Bloomington.  Freshmen are required to live on campus.

IUPUI and IU meal plan costs will increase by $100 under the proposal. Carney says the dining facilities will stay open later to accommodate students' schedules.

"For that reason, we need to have a stable base of funding that will allow us to then serve them," says Carney.

Carney says the amount of beds at IU Bloomington will increase from 8,600 to 11,000 when the Foster and McNutt residence halls reopen.

Both buildings were closed in 2018 after mold was discovered.

IU spokesperson Chuck Carney says the rate increases are effective for the 2020-2021 school year.
