In response to a question asked of our City Limits: Coronavirus team, here is some good news for Hoosiers who are self-employed but not working during these stressful COVID-19 times.
The CARES Act Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) has created a temporary federal unemployment insurance program for individuals not usually eligible for unemployment insurance benefits, including the self-employed, independent contractors, gig workers, those seeking part-time employment, and individuals lacking sufficient work history but who would be able to work and looking for work were it not due to COVID-19. PUA is not payable to individuals who can telework with pay or who are receiving paid sick leave or other paid leave benefits.
Indiana’s PUA application process began April 27. The actual payments started in early May. Those who have already filed for pandemic unemployment assistance and have been denied will get an email with additional instructions from the department, if they haven't already.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development created a new system to accommodate these applications. Claims may take up to 21 days to process. In the meantime, you should contact your utility company, landlord or your mortgage lender to let them know you are waiting for your benefits.
