More than 3,000 Hoosiers have died after becoming infected with COVID-19, Indiana health officials announced Saturday.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported 1,010 new positive cases and nine additional confirmed deaths on Saturday.
The latest confirmed deaths brought the overall death toll to 3,001. Some 85,317 people have been infected, according to the department.
There are also 217 reported probable deaths, which the state classifies as "those for which a physician listed COVID-19 as a contributing cause based on X-rays, scans and other clinical symptoms but for which no positive test is on record.”
In Monroe County, the total COVID-19 case number rose by 12 to 845, although the county death toll remained the same at 35, the department said.
Some 19,683 Monroe County residents have been tested, it said.
The new cases come as thousands of students arrive in Bloomington and Monroe County ahead of the Indiana University fall semester, which begins Monday.
The university is requiring students to get tested before attending classes.
The university spread out its move-in period over two weeks, with no more than 1,500 students a day moving into university housing.
To encourage social distancing, most rooms are now for one tenant.
Indiana’s health department says it has tested 969,646 people across the state so far. That number includes tests run by the state, the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, and some private laboratories.
The number of tests that return positive is 8.8%, the department says. It says the "number of tests is provisional and reflects only those reported to ISDH. Numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.”
Saturday's numbers show that 10.1% of the state's 2,334 existing ICU beds are being used by patients with COVID-19-related illnesses, while 37.6% are still available.
And as of noon Saturday, 2.6% of the state's 2,896 total ventilators are being used by COVID-19 patients, while 83.1% are still available. Mitch Legan contributed to this report.
