Some Southern Indiana Counties Seeing Drop In Opioid Overdoses From 2017

The number of opioid overdoses in several Indiana counties is down from the same time last year. And, fewer of those deaths was connected to heroin.

Bartholomew County saw 19 overdose deaths through last September. This year, the county had about half as many overdoses during the same time period.

But Deputy Coroner Jay Frederick says the total overdose count doesn’t cover the whole story. He says which drugs are involved, as well as which demographics are affected, are important to consider.

"Because in the drug world, the drug of choice shifts over time depending on a lot of things," Frederick says. "The drug world is an economy of its own."

Frederick says the number of deaths connected to heroin is also down – from seven in 2017 to just one so far this year.

Frederick says the decrease in overdose deaths could be in part because of first responders’ access to naloxone, an opioid reversal drug.

"There’s no question that it’s saving lives," Frederick says. "It’s keeping some people from crossing over."

He also says the public has likely learned that there is a higher risk of overdose connected with heroin use, particularly when it is mixed with other compounds such as fentanyl.

Frederick says the lower number of opioid-related overdoses doesn’t mean the problem is going away.

"It doesn’t really matter what the drug of the day is," Frederick says. "We need to understand addiction and how it works, and we also need to understand why America has such a huge appetite for drugs in general."

Brown, Monroe and Vigo counties are also seeing a drop in opioid-related deaths so far this year.

But overdoses Scott County, which received national attention for an HIV outbreak connected to the opioid crisis in 2015, are up. The county has seen eight overdose deaths since January of this year. That’s compared to three deaths during the same period last year.
