Parke County Cancels Covered Bridge Festival Due To COVID-19

The Parke County Commissioners voted this week to cancel the annual Covered Bridge Festival, which normally draws over 1 million people to the area.

The festival lasts over a week, and hundreds of vendors from across the country rent land from locals to sell goods to festival-goers touring the 31 bridges spread throughout Parke County.

Jim Meece is the president of the Parke County Board of Commissioners. He said the county’s economy relies heavily on revenue the festival brings in. But commissioners felt going through with the festival was not worth the risk of potentially exposing residents to COVID-19.

“Either we’re going to have people who aren’t going to be able to make money off the activities of the festival, or we’re exposing them and putting them at risk for health concerns," he said. "We decided it was best to air on the side of caution." 

Meece added that Parke County is a small community with a population of almost 17,000 people, and that their number of first responders is limited.

"If we had just a handful of those first responders get infected and have to be quarantined, we wouldn't have enough people to take care of our needs, let alone all the needs of all the people that would be coming here," he said.

Meece said to make sure no vendors come in from out of town, the county won’t issue any licenses that allow businesses to sell merchandise at an address different from what’s listed on their merchant certificate. 

The festival would have been Oct. 9-18.
