Pediatric cancer death rates have dropped significantly in recent decades, but sarcoma in children remains difficult to cure. The Indiana University School of Medicine will be the site for a planned clinical trial to advance a cure.

Sarcoma is cancer of the connective tissues.

IU School of Medicine Professor of Pediatrics Jamie Renbarger says the school’s Precision Health Initiative is finding some success through genetic testing in children with aggressive or relapsed forms of the disease.

"We’re able to identify often, multiple things that seem to be making those cells grow out of control, and in many cases there are already approved FDA drugs that actually target those very pathways," Renbarger says.

Treatments can be identified in about 90 percent of cases.

The school will work with pharmaceutical companies while planning the upcoming clinical trial. The trial is expected to open within the next year.
