Indiana Officials Report 23 More Coronavirus Deaths

Twenty-three more people have died in Indiana with coronavirus infections, giving the state 2,339 deaths of those with confirmed or presumed infections in less than three months, health officials said Tuesday.

All of the newly recorded deaths have happened since May 31, with most of them occurring Sunday or Monday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

State statistics posted online Tuesday show Indiana with 892 COVID-19 deaths during May, a drop from the 1,037 recorded in April. The outbreak first hit the state in March, when 113 deaths were recorded.

An additional 116 deaths have occurred so far in June, although there is often a delay of several days before some deaths are included in the total.

Those only include deaths involving confirmed coronavirus infections. The state has recorded 181 additional deaths considered coronavirus-related by doctors but without confirmation of the illness from test results.

Monroe County's total case number is up by three, bringing the county's case total to 179. The Monroe County death toll is up by two and is now 17 in total. Data provided shows 4,254 Monroe County residents have been tested. 

The latest state statistics showed 306 COVID-19 patients were in the intensive care units of Indiana hospitals and that 39% of ICU beds remained available as of Monday. That’s 104 fewer coronavirus patients in those ICUs than on May 20, and about half of the 621 ICU patients on April 23.

This coming weekend, bars and playgrounds in Monroe County will be allowed to reopen as part of the next stage of the governor's reopening plan.

And most casinos across the state will reopen next week, given that they follow coronavirus safety plans.
