The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department is the recipient of the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management for the second time.

The National Recreation and Park Association and the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration awards the prize each year in divisions based on population.

The award recognizes achievement in resource management, long-range planning, environmental stewardship, and more. Bloomington also won the award in 2007; the award was established in 1965.

According to a City of Bloomington statement, agencies are judged on "their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of community members, staff and elected officials."

"Our dedicated and talented staff are committed to excellence and to the highest standards of operations," said Paula McDevitt, Administrator of the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, in a statement. "We are especially proud to share this award with the people of Bloomington, whose longstanding support of parks and recreation programs and properties is an instrumental part of our success."

Bloomington won in the Class III category for communities with a population between 75,000 and 150,000. Other finalists in the category include Evanston, Illinois; Greeley, Colorado; and Lawrence, Kansas.
