Crane Welcomes New Army Commander

There's a new army commander at Crane Naval Base. Col. Rob Dixon, the head of Crane Army Ammunitions Activity, relinquished control of the post to his successor, Col. James Hooper on Wednesday morning.

As the commander of Crane's ammunitions activity, Hooper will head up the smaller of the naval base's two tenets, the other being the naval surface warfare center. He'll manage day-to-day operations and oversee the 600 civilian employees involved with logistics and manufacturing of ammunition.

"I'm extremely humbled and honored to be a part of the Joint Munitions Command and Crane Army Ammunition Activity," Hooper said in a ceremony Wednesday morning at NSA Crane. "Having recently left Kuwait after supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and seven other countries in the Middle East, I can tell you that what happens here at Crane is as important, critical and relevant as it has ever has been."

Crane spokeman Tom Peske explains that like other military posts, the position requires a regular turnover.

"In army units, the commander rotates after a set number of years to provide fresh leaderships to a command," he explains. "It's done throughout the army. in pretty much all military units you'll have a change in command, all the way up to our commander-in-chief, the president."

Peske says rotating leadership not only serves military leaders but their subordinates as well.

"By rotating commanders, it allows us to get fresh perspective fresh leadership ideas and gives the commanders more experience with the different facets of the army."

Previously, Hooper has served in positions around the globe. The departing Col. Dixon is moving to a logistics position in Fort Hood, Texas.
