Bloomington Commission Looking Into Scooter Regulations

Bloomington’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Commission met for the first time Monday since hundreds of electric scooters were dropped off in the city.

Commission member Mallory Rickbeil says the scooters could fall within the city’s goal of reducing vehicle use, but without an agreement in place between the scooter companies and the city, there’s no way to track their usage.

“We don’t know if these scooters are replacing Lyft rides or people driving in the by themselves," Rickbeil says. "So we would like to be able to look at that and evaluate that.”

Rickbeil says the scooters still need to be better regulated with rules on how they’re used and where they’re parked.

Indiana University impounded nearly 150 of the Bird and Lime scooters just weeks after the new service became available.

Bloomington officials have said that the city’s legal department is considering whether regulations are necessary.

Meanwhile the city is working with a consulting firm to review its overall transportation plan.
