There will be no Hoosier football this fall.
Big Ten Athletic Conference officials met Tuesday and voted to postpone the 2020 collegiate athletics season until spring due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
"The mental and physical health of our student-athletes will be at the center of every decision," Warren said."We want to be exceptional about how we treat our student-athletes."
Other fall sports including women's volleyball, men's and women's cross county, men's and women's soccer and field hockey will also be postponed.
Indiana University officials responded to the announcement.
"As a lifelong Hoosier and IU sports fan, I am disappointed that we won’t be able to enjoy seeing our teams compete, but I am most devastated for our students. They invest an enormous amount of time, effort, and energy for the opportunity to represent IU on the field," IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Dolson said in a statement.
Dolson said as difficult as the news is to absorb, he believes it's the right decision.
"Throughout this process, the Big Ten Conference has made the health and safety of our students, staffs, and communities the No. 1 concern and priority," Dolson said. "Today, our medical experts believe it is not currently safe to take the next step to participating in intercollegiate competitions."
IU athletics said it will be in contact with season ticket holders and Hoosier fans when more information becomes available.
The Big Ten said it will still consider moving games to the spring semester.
"This is where the work continues," Warren said. "We will look toward the future and continue to allow the medical information that we have to guide our decisions."
