Airbnb Reports Rapid Growth In Indiana In 2017

Airbnb reports rapid growth for the short-term rental service in Indiana this year.

About 175,000 visitors to Indiana this year stayed in someone else's home using Airbnb, according to a report from the company. The report also says Hoosiers hosting visitors in their homes earned a combined $20.7 million through the site.

Indianapolis welcomed about 73,000 visitors to Airbnb homes, a  256 percent growth in the past year. Statewide the home-sharing service grew 108 percent.

The state capitol tops the list of Indiana cities for most visitors and most host income earned. South Bend and Bloomington come second and third, but each with far fewer visitors and much less income. The report says about 3,600 Hoosiers are Airbnb hosts.

Home-sharing has been a controversial issue in Indiana this year. Some lawmakers attempted to pass a law that would have prohibited towns and cities from banning short-term rentals, but it didn't get enough support to pass. The issue is likely to return during the 2018 legislative session, which begins Jan. 3.
