How Many Charter Schools Does Gary Need?

    Two proposed dropout recovery charter schools in Gary withdrew their applications in advance of a meeting of the Indiana Charter Board Monday. Critics say the city’s existing charter schools are already putting a strain on the public education system. The two proposed schools could apply again as soon as July for consideration in October. Are eight charters enough in Gary?

The withdrawals came after three state lawmakers and Gary Community School Corp. officials criticized the charter schools for failing to send representatives to a hearing on their proposals on Thursday in Gary.
