Education, From The Capitol To The Classroom

The Daily Report Card: Tenure Denied, Seeking Change, And Indianapolis Driven Politics

    In The Classroom Today

A Professor and His Wife on the Shock of Tenure Denial – The Chronicle Review – The Chronicle of Higher Education Five years ago, my family packed up our possessions and moved from Chicago to Boston. This transition was not by choice. In its finite wisdom, the University of Chicago’s department of political science had denied me tenure, forcing me to find employment elsewhere. At the time, I remember not being crazy about this sequence of events but not really having the time to process it. There were children to get into school, a house to find and furnish, a new commute to master, and so forth. (chronicle.com)

Indiana teachers group, some legislators to seek changes to education funding, oversight: HeraldTimesOnline.com(Pay Walled) Although the “right to work” law is expected to dominate the 2012 legislation session, some lawmakers and educational groups will be pushing for educational change that includes early education funding, oversight of the state’s voucher program, teacher evaluations and surplus dollars. Gail Zeheralis, public education policy coordinator for the Indiana State Teachers Association, said the association’s No. 1 concern is funding. (heraldtimesonline.com)

JournalGazette.net – Learning Curve | The Journal Gazette | Fort Wayne, IN It would be nice to dismiss the Indianapolis-driven policies as harmless, but 30 years of observing Indiana government has made it clear to me that the Circle City is the proverbial tail wagging the dog. Indiana’s harmful property tax caps are the best example of a one-size-fits-all fix to a problem contained almost entirely to Marion County, but there are many more. In education, the criticism of lavish school buildings isn’t based in statewide reality; it’s the Indianapolis view of the city’s suburban schools. (journalgazette.net)
