Morning Bell: Vouchers And Creationism, Daniels and Purdue
—C. Welton Gaddy, minister
Louisiana funds schools that teach creationism? Indiana does too – “Louisiana’s school-voucher program has been getting a lot of media attention for providing public funding to religious schools that teach creationism and far-right ideas about U.S. history. The fact that Indiana’s voucher program does the same thing has largely escaped scrutiny.” School Matters
Mitch Daniels challenges new Purdue students to be ‘all stars’ – “Clad in a yellow Boilermaker T-shirt and black cap, Purdue’s president-elect pumped his fits and shouted cheers with around 5,500 new students, whom he called “my new classmates,” at an athletic-themed pep rally on the West Lafayette campus.” (It looks like Daniels will be able to cheer in front of the legislature, too — two experts say the state’s ethics rules shouldn’t bar him from lobbying for Purdue.) Area schools compete for transfer students – “Northeastern has 50 to 60 more transfer students enrolled this year, Edsell said. Centerville also has about 60 additional transfer students. At $6,000 each, those students mean $300,000 to $360,000 in additional state tuition support for those districts.” Richmond Palladium-Item
More school choice for NWI parents – “The state’s new expansive voucher program is entering its second year, and more than 8,000 parents are receiving state vouchers to send their children to private, typically religious-based schools.” Gary Post-Tribune
