Education Study Committee Finishes Recommendations For Legislature

The interim study committee on education considered multiple proposals before formalizing recommendations for lawmakers.

One would have allowed students living in the U.S. without legal permission to pay in-state tuition at Indiana colleges and universities. Indiana is one of three states in the country that specifically prohibits that.

But the recommendation failed to garner enough votes.

The committee does recommend that the Indiana Department of Education request a waiver from the federal government to allow the state to keep its current types of high school diplomas.

A new federal law would bar Indiana’s general diploma from counting towards graduation rates. If that happens, the state’s rate would fall.

More than 12 percent students earned the general diploma in 2016.
