We’re now well into the dog days of summer (an expression which here means, “too hot to think about going outdoors”) and you’re probably on your ninth trip of the month to go buy ice cream. Why not step up your frozen treat game?

Chef Daniel Orr invited WFIU’s Earth Eats over to FARMbloomington to try out an incredibly easy coffee citrus granita, an Italian shaved ice.

The dessert only takes a few minutes to prep, (plus a couple hours in the freezer) but it makes a beautiful, delicate dish. The citrus flavor cuts right through the bitterness of the coffee, and the Kahlúa sweetens the whole deal.

If you’re feeling extra fancy, why not garnish your granita with some whipped cream and coffee beans? And here’s a pro tip from Chef Orr: chill the dish before serving the granita so it doesn’t melt before it gets to the table.
