Education, From The Capitol To The Classroom

Back To School: It’s Not Just For Students

Today marks the first day of school for students in many school corporations around the state, and classes have already begun in a few districts.

But a lot of work happens even before the first bell rings. Summer vacation ended early for teachers, principals, lunchroom staff and other personnel, who have been preparing for students’ return for weeks.

You may have noticed some of the prep work going on in your own neighborhood. Over the last week, some district bus drivers have been going on “dry runs,” practicing the routes they’ll drive every morning and afternoon the year.

Patti Newell has been a bus driver in the Monroe County Community School Corporation for 19 years – and she says even after all that time, the first day of school is still nerve-wracking.

“I’m excited, and a little nervous,” Newell admits. “I know the route and I know some of the children, but I’ll be getting some new brothers and sisters.”

“Sometimes they cry, and that’s understandable if they haven’t been away from mom or dad,” Newell explains. “What I’ll do differently is when I go to make my elementary stops, I’ll take a little bit more time.”

During her final practice run last Friday, Newell let StateImpact along for the ride – take a listen!
