Maple Grove Road

Maple Grove Road is a unique area in our state and is the center of a large area that earned the distinction as Indiana’s first rural historic district in the register of historic places in 1998. The district, on the northwest side of Bloomington, includes miles of historic dry-laid stone walls, 19th-century homesteads, a church, barns, and a cemetery. It is anchored by the 1828 Daniel Stout house and the circa 1880 farm of Indiana author Rachel Peden. In 2008 the district appeared on the Ten Most Endangered Landmarks list. New subdivisions and heavy traffic seriously threaten its character. It is important that people continue to work hard for its preservation.
