Ballerina and IU Distinguished Professor of Ballet Violette Verdy

Violette Verdy was the Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet for twenty years and an internationally known ballerina with major companies in America and Europe.

Along with dancing, she has credits as a former artistic director, choreographer, and teacher for dance companies and schools throughout the world, including the Paris Opera Ballet.

Verdy is author of two children's books, Giselle: A Role for a Lifetime and Of Swans, Sugar Plums and Satin Slippers.

In February 2009, President of France M. Nicolas Sarkozy knighted Verdy a Chevalier in France's National Order of the Legion of Honor for her numerous contributions to ballet.
